NEW YORK, July 2 (Hina) - Croatia is one of the countries which are
concerned about low population growth rates and their consequences
for the long-term development of those countries, Croatian Health
Minister Zeljko Reiner told a special session of the U.N. General
Assembly on population and development.
Demographic movements in Croatia are the consequence of a
decreasing number of the newly-born, as well as of negative
migration courses, and especially of the aggression Croatia was
exposed to, said Reiner.
As many other countries, Croatia has experienced a large number of
the aged in its population. More than 13 per cent of the population
are persons aged over 65.
Another problem is the unfavourable spatial distribution. Entire
regions have been affected by depopulation, whereby population is
concentrated in and around a small number of urban centres, Reiner
said stressing negative demographic indicators of Croatian
islands.
The Croatian minister informed participants in the session about
demographic programmes adopted by the Croatian Government.
However, he said, many countries, including Croatia, would not be
able to implement those programmes without foreign financial
help.
Reiner mentioned a World Bank loan as a rare positive example of
help for the reform of the Croatian health system.
