VELIKO TRGOVISCE, July 1 (Hina) - Croatian President Franjo Tudjman
on Thursday visited the recently reconstructed house where he was
born in Veliko Trgovisce, north of Zagreb. He was accompanied by his
wife Ankica and members of his family.
The President was received by representatives of the Croatian State
Foundation, which undertook the reconstruction project, MPs from
Krapina-Zagorje County, and officials of Veliko Trgovisce
Municipality.
Addressing the present, President Tudjman asserted, "we have
achieved a miracle in which not only nobody believed, but which some
even wanted to prevent."
"In the international circumstances that we have, the principal
forces of international policy wanted to preserve Yugoslavia, they
didn't want Croatia. Despite everything, we have created it, we do
have difficulties, but these difficulties, of our and your
government, we must eliminate. We must have trust in ourselves and
in the Croat people as a whole, and rest assured that Croatia will
become a country not only of democracy, but of freedom and well-
being as well," the President said.
The Foundation intends to prepare Tudjman's birth-house for the
research of recent Croatian history, said its president Ivic
Pasalic.
A memorial plaque by the house reads: "In this house, Dr Franjo
Tudjman, the founder of the HDZ (1990) and of independent,
sovereign, and democratic Croatia, was born in 1922 and lived."
The President's advisor for local self-government and government,
Franjo Kajfes, said the house was reconstructed to look as in the
1920s, when it was built, with original furniture from the period.
Works took one year and cost DM200,000.
