CRO LOWER HOUSE DISCUSSES RIGHTS OF HOMELAND WAR VETERANS

ZAGREB, June 24 (Hina) - The Croatian Government should be obliged to be responsible in the implementation of the law on rights of Croatian Homeland War Veterans and members of their families, it was stressed at the Croatian National Sabor's House of Representatives' session on Thursday. Representatives stressed that the Law was not implemented entirely. They pointed to the problem of demilitarised soldiers' unemployment, and the housing problem. The Croatian Homeland War Veterans Minister, Juraj Njavro, said that between October 1998 and March 1999, 6,700 demilitarised soldiers were employed, 46 demilitarised soldiers received loans for self-employment, and 295 became farm owners. For the past two years, 151 houses have been constructed for 100 percent invalids, while another 23 houses are still to be constructed. Commenting on newspapers headlines on a large number of suicides among Croatian War Veterans, Njavro said that out of 758 suicides committed in Croatia in 1998, 90 were committed by veterans. Representatives pointed to the unemployment problem among demilitarised soldiers. About 25,000 veterans have been erased from the Croatian Employment Bureau because they failed to register at the Bureau on time. Representatives also stressed that the number of Croatian Homeland War veterans has increased. According to estimates, the number amounts to 500,000.
