ZAGREB, June 24 (Hina) - The third millennium begins on January 1, 2001, not on January 1, 2000, as is frequently claimed, the Croatian Government Commission for solving the Y2K (Millennium Bug) said Thursday. Frequent are claims that
the year 1999 is the last year of this century, which is incorrect. The year 2000 is the last year of the twentieth century, that is, the second millennium, and the year 2001 is the first year of the 21st century and the third millennium, the Commission said. ZAGREB, June 24 (Hina) - The third millennium begins on January 1,
2001, not on January 1, 2000, as is frequently claimed, the Croatian
Government Commission for solving the Y2K (Millennium Bug) said
Thursday.
Frequent are claims that the year 1999 is the last year of this
century, which is incorrect. The year 2000 is the last year of the
twentieth century, that is, the second millennium, and the year
2001 is the first year of the 21st century and the third millennium,
the Commission said.
It also warned the year 2000 is a leap year.
Commission spokesman and assistant to Science and technology
Minister, Predrag Pale, said the Commission decided to explain the
beginning of the new millennium because of frequent claims in the
media that the third millennium would begin on January 1, 2000.
The Commission is a central state body for co-ordinating and
implementing activities concerning solving the millennium bug,
which disables most computers and automated equipment to recognise
the transition from the year 1999 into the year 2000 because of the
two-digit system of marking years.
The state institute for norm setting and gauging, prepared a draft
of the Croatian norm (nHRN EN 28601), based on the international
norm for digitally indicating date and time (ISO 8601:1988), which
would remove risks from incorrect interpretation of data and avoid
errors and their consequences.
In line with this norm, the date will e indicated by a fur-digit
number.
