OPPOSITION SUPPORTS RETURNING DEBTS TO PENSIONERS - LOWER HOUSE

ZAGREB, June 23 (Hina) - The Croatian state owes years of pensions to retirees, and the return of debt to pensioners is a legal and moral issue, Opposition MPs said at Wednesday's session of the Croatian National Parliament's House of Representatives. During a discussion on the Information on the implementation of a decision of the Constitutional Court dating May 12, 1998, on cancelling provisions of a law on harmonising pensions, Opposition MPs said the Government had failed to implement the decision. Labour and Welfare Minister Joso Skara said the Government held it had adhered to conditions from the decision by the Constitutional Court by passing two pension laws. This was confirmed by the Constitutional Court itself by dismissing on December 1998 a request for an assessment of the constitutionality of any of the laws, Skara said. Labour and Welfare Minister Joso Skara said the Government held it had adhered to conditions from the decision by the Constitutional Court by passing two pension laws. This was confirmed by the Constitutional Court itself by dismissing on December 1998 a request for an assessment of the constitutionality of any of the laws, Skara said. According to the law, pension funds will receive more than a billion US dollars in 48 instalments. However, the Opposition claims the laws resolved only a part of the debts to the pension fund, but nothing to the pensioners.
