VARAZDIN, June 13 (Hina) - Arranging the entire heritage left by a famous Croatian poet, Gustav Krklec (1899-1977), the head of the Varazdin Town Library, Marijan Kras, has recently discovered a postcard which great writers of this

The design of the May Day postcard reflected the atmosphere of the then civil war-stricken Spain. VARAZDIN, June 13 (Hina) - Arranging the entire heritage left by a
famous Croatian poet, Gustav Krklec (1899-1977), the head of the
Varazdin Town Library, Marijan Kras, has recently discovered a
postcard which great writers of this century - Ernest Hemingway,
John Dos Passos and Ludwig Renn - sent from Madrid to Krklec on May
1, 1937.
The design of the May Day postcard reflected the atmosphere of the
then civil war-stricken Spain.
This card revealing the sympathy of Hemingway, Passos and Renn with
ideas of Republicans who fought against Franco, was issued by the
Republican propaganda ministry, and on it Pablo Picasso
caricatured 'Los Nacionales' - the Fascist oligarchy of General
Franco accompanied by Nazi financiers.
The weekly "Varazdinske vijesti" has written about this discovery.
The author of the article, D. Pericic, added that today Hemingway is
to most famous out of these three writers who sent the postcard to
Krklec.
It is interesting that Krklec has mentioned this postcard in his
essay on Hemingway.
"The postcard with his (Hemingway's) signature is a precious
memento for me. When I received it I adored Dos Passos and was
translating Renn. Today - if I knew his language - I would translate
Hemingway..." Krklec wrote in the essay.
One more interesting fact from Krklec's life. A few years before his
death, a BBC TV crew came in Zagreb to film the only portrait of
Franz Kafka, which was in the ownership of Krklec who had met the
writer of 'The Process' in Prague in his youth.
On June 24 Croatia is to mark the 100th anniversary since Krklec's
birth.
