OSIJEK OSIJEK, June 3 (Hina) - A round table discussion on the connection of the Danube River Area with the Adriatic Sea and on the construction of the Danube-Sava Canal was held in eastern Croatian city of Osijek on Thursday. The
basic purpose of the construction of this canal is to open the international traffic corridor "Danube River Area-Adriatic" via the navigable way by the Sava river from Samac to Zagreb, said a professor, Josip Marusic, at the discussion. By the construction of the canal, the navigable way will be shortened by 417 kilometres, and furthermore, 40,000 hectares of arable land will be irrigated in an easy way. The length of this canal is to be 61.5 long, whereas the bottom is to be wide 34 metres. In addition, 14 road and four railway bridges will be built. The round table in Osijek, organised by the Croatian Academy of Arts
and Sciences (HAZU) local branch, gathered professors and experts
