SPLIT COURT SPLIT, May 31 (Hina) - The trial of a former commander of the Croatian military police's 73rd unit, Lieutenant Colonel Zeljko Maglov, and another 15 persons indicted for the smuggling of stolen vehicles began at the Split
County Court on Monday. The judge presiding over the case is Josip Cule. Members of the so-called "Maglov group" are charged with organised smuggling of expensive cars stolen mostly abroad during 1995, 1996, and 1997. The cars were smuggled into Croatia bearing military police registration plates, and were later transferred to Bosnia-Herzegovina, where they were sold. Among other charges, the indictees are charged with theft, incitement to abuse of office and violation of customs laws. All indicted, except for Branko Grubisic, are present at the trial. According to unofficial sources, Grubisic is at sea and will be tried in absentia. An arrest warrant has been issued for him.(hina)
