VUKOVAR VUKOVAR, May 26 (Hina) - Witnesses Stipan Lucic and Josip Radovic on Wednesday were interrogated before the Vukovar County Court Council in court's main hearing against 22 defendants. According to the indictment, the 22
defendants participated in the attempt of ethnic cleansing in Eastern Croatia and creating Great Serbia during the Serb occupation of Vukovar. They also participated in the killings and harassment of prisoners, taking them to concentration camps, and displacing non-Serb prisoners. Only Stevan Curnic was present at the hearing, while the other 21 defendants were on the run. They are being tried without presence in the court. Witness Lucic was a Croatian Homeland War soldier. After the occupation of Vukovar he was imprisoned by the former Yugoslav Peoples Army, and taken to the Veleproment warehouse, where he was handed over to Chetniks. Wednesday were interrogated before the Vukovar County Court
Council in court's main hearing against 22 defendants.
According to the indictment, the 22 defendants participated in the
attempt of ethnic cleansing in Eastern Croatia and creating Great
Serbia during the Serb occupation of Vukovar. They also
participated in the killings and harassment of prisoners, taking
them to concentration camps, and displacing non-Serb prisoners.
Only Stevan Curnic was present at the hearing, while the other 21
defendants were on the run. They are being tried without presence in
the court.
Witness Lucic was a Croatian Homeland War soldier. After the
occupation of Vukovar he was imprisoned by the former Yugoslav
Peoples Army, and taken to the Veleproment warehouse, where he was
handed over to Chetniks. The witness said he saw defendant Curnic
among the chetniks. In the warehouse he was beaten by iron bars, and
baseball bats. The witness said Curnic shot him in the legs. Lucic
was saved by the International Red Cross.
He was then taken to Serbia and imprisoned in the Sremska Mitrovica
prison. After the prison he was transferred to the Stajiceva
concentration camp where he was beaten and tortured along with
other prisoners. After one month, he was transferred to Nis and
placed in a cold solitary confinement. After that he was brought
back to Sremska Mitrovica, where he remained until the exchange of
prisoners, August 14, 1992
When asked if he knew Ekrem Makicevic, Lucic said he knew him but
heard Makicevic had been shot by Curnic.
Witness Radacevic of Serb nationality was to be executed in the
Velepromet warehouse along with his wife because her brother was a
member of the Croatian Army. Then, they were told that Serbs could
leave for Serbia, so Radakovic left. he returned to Vukovar in
February 1992. He said he saw Curnic and several other defendants,
adding, however, he did not remember seeing them committing
crimes.
