ZAGREB, May 24 (Hina) - Croatian Justice Minister Zvonimir
Separovic and the former president of international Jewish
organisation B'nai B'rith, Tommy Baer, on Monday held talks in
Zagreb discussing the Zagreb trial of war crimes suspect and
Croatian World War Two commander, Dinko Sakic.
Baer was invited prior to the trial by Croatian President Franjo
Tudjman to follow the trial as an international observer.
Baer said he was aware the nature of the trial was very delicate and
that it was important for Croatia's reputation, and added he was
following the trial very closely from the United States.
He said he believed justice would be done at the end of the trial,
and agreed with Minister Separovic that the goal of the trial was
truth.
He also added the trial was proceeding as he had expected.
Baer was also satisfied with the cooperation with Croatian
authorities to date, and said he believed the cooperation would
continue.
Separovic said he was sure that "in this case, all the principles of
the law, as well as the human rights of the victims and of the
defendant, will be respected, and that the court will reach a
verdict based on the evidence it is gathering."
The justice minister said the talks with Baer also tackled the
possibility of having one witness from Israel, unable to come to
Zagreb due to poor health, testify via a video screen, with
assistance from the Croatian Embassy in Israel.
"The Zagreb County Court will certainly consider this possibility
and carry it out," Separovic said.
He and Baer also tackled the situation in Croatia, especially a
recent incident in downtown Zagreb, where a group of people
obstructed an anti-fascist rally and caused a fight.
"I assured Mr Baer that the Croatian government will do everything
to shed light on this case," Separovic said.
