ZAGREB, May 10 (Hina) - Indictments for war crimes but not be politically motivated, they must be based on firm evidence, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, said in Zagreb on Monday. I mentioned the issue of issuing
indictments for war crimes because it is very important that they be based on clear evidence; such an indictment must not become a political weapon, Robinson told reporters Monday after a meeting with Croatian Minister for European Integrations, Ljerka Mintas Hodak. Hodak said Croatia cannot give up from having war crimes perpetrators punished, but Robinson had received our guarantee that "all proceedings for war crimes during the aggression on Croatia will be carried out fairly and transparently before Croatian courts, with the possibility of being observed by international observers". ZAGREB, May 10 (Hina) - Indictments for war crimes but not be
politically motivated, they must be based on firm evidence, UN High
Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, said in Zagreb on
Monday.
I mentioned the issue of issuing indictments for war crimes because
it is very important that they be based on clear evidence; such an
indictment must not become a political weapon, Robinson told
reporters Monday after a meeting with Croatian Minister for
European Integrations, Ljerka Mintas Hodak.
Hodak said Croatia cannot give up from having war crimes
perpetrators punished, but Robinson had received our guarantee
that "all proceedings for war crimes during the aggression on
Croatia will be carried out fairly and transparently before
Croatian courts, with the possibility of being observed by
international observers".
The talks, attended also by Interior Minister Ivan Penic, Deputy
Justice Minister Snjezana Bagic and Supreme Court president
Marijan Ramuscak, also focused on the programme of return of
refugees and displaced persons and problems in its
implementation.
There is resoluteness for progress to be achieved in the protection
of human rights, which is obvious in the Agreement on Technical
Cooperation which I signed today with the Croatian Foreign
Minister, Robinson said.
Mintas-Hodak said Robinson had been acquainted with the
"systematic and planned policy of protection of human rights which
has been implemented in Croatia for the past several years".
She stressed she believed the Croatian side had managed to remove
all misunderstandings and unclear issues and explain that "the
speed and quality of implementing the programme of return,
especially the ability of every person to return to their home...
greatly depended on the financial possibilities of the state an on
the help of the international community, which has been envisaged
in the Programme itself".
