WASHINGTON, May 6 (Hina) - Six Croatian mayors are on a two-week
tour of several American towns, the purpose of which is for the
mayors to become acquainted with the activities of municipal
administration and public utility companies, reconstruction and
other issues.
The tour started on Wednesday in Washington, where the Croatian
delegation met Senator Richard Lugar. The delegation includes the
mayors of eastern Croatian towns of Djakovo and Slavonski Brod,
Darko Vrtaric and Vladimir Jerkovic; of coastal towns of Pula,
Rijeka and Split - Giancarlo Zupic, Slavko Linic, and Ivan Skaric;
and the mayor of the northern Croatian town of Varazdin, Hrvoje
Vojvoda. The delegation visited the National League of Cities, the
State Department and the ministries of traffic and agriculture.
The tour will also include Charlston, which had been almost
completely destroyed by hurricane Hugo, as well as Minneapolis and
Saint Paul. The delegation will spend the last days of their visit
in Providence and New York.
The Croatian mayors believe part of the experience of the US cities
they visited will help them run their towns better. This especially
refers to a US model of privatisation of some sectors of city
administration.
The visit was organised by the US Information Agency and the US
Embassy in Zagreb, with special support by Ambassador William
Montgomery.
