into the eastern Croatian Vukovar-Srijem County, the its economy is
in great difficulties, Croatian Prime Minister Zlatko Matesa said
during Wednesday's visit of a Government delegation to the county.
The Government representatives held talks with the county
leadership and the mayors of the towns of Vinkovci, Vukovar,
Zupanja and Ilok.
"The bankruptcy of the Zupanjska Bank is not the bankruptcy of the
economy which was in the past several years relied on it, as some
people with shallow political motives like to say. With the bank's
bankruptcy, and rescheduling of loans, we are trying to make these
companies able to pay back their loans, Matesa said.
He added the Government had ensured money to pay back most savings
deposits of citizens, which will begin as soon as bankruptcy is
pronounced.
During talks on the county's economy, participants agreed on a list
of companies which have to be rehabilitated as soon as possible.
Asked how much the Government would invest in the rehabilitation of
these companies, Matesa said it was difficult to say, because the
money was being set aside from various sources, but that they are
significant investments.
The Government would continue to support the construction of
capital facilities connected with the construction of the Danube-
Sava channel, the expansion of the gas supply network and utility
infrastructure.
The project for the recycling of construction materials in Vukovar
has been granted, and this will stimulate the reconstruction of the
town, Matesa said.
After talks with the county leadership, Matesa set into motion the
new gas supply network in Stari Jankovci, near Vinkovci.
