WASHINGTON, April 10 (Hina) - Croatia has since Friday been placed
into the group of states which the United States Government holds is
fulfilling all conditions, and therefore have the right to directly
procure American arms and military equipment.
The presidential decision by Bill Clinton means that Croatia is no
longer under the seven and a half-year-old UN embargo on arms and
equipment export from countries.
With such cooperation, Clinton said in a statement to the US State
Secretary Madeleine Albright, the United States' security is being
consolidated and world peace promoted.
State Department spokesman James Rubin said the American diplomacy
had suggested such a measure following extensive reforms the
Croatian Government has done to increase the transparency of the
military part of the state budget, and strengthen civilian control
over the military.
The United Stated hopes such reforms will continue, Rubin
stressed.
