ZAGREB, Apr 3 (Hina) - The head of the Catholic Church in Croatia and
Archbishop of Zagreb Josip Bozanic on Saturday issued a message via
television, radio and other media, wishing the best for Easter to
all Croats in Croatia and around the world
Msgr Bozanic said on Easter we celebrate the victory of life.
Preceding is the "week of martyrdom", when man is sentenced to death
in various ways.
Addressed the work issue, the archbishop said man has the right to
work, which comes before profit. "Unemployment, dismissals,
deprivation of salaries are all sins of our times," he stressed.
Man is also sentenced to death when he is deprived of "commitment
and responsibility for the future (...) The Christian is a man of
the future and bearer of hope for the future. But one must also give,
and through hope and work create new and better living conditions.
The Christian is called on to stand for the life and progress of his
environment according to his capabilities," Bozanic said.
He emphasised man is also sentenced to death when he "is fed only on
negative information, when he is prevented from seeing the good
sides of life as well." The world of today aspires only towards
sensationalism, the more extreme the more inviting, Bozanic said,
pointing out a new education is necessary to help man look forward
to the gifts God bestows upon him.
The archbishop also criticised the abuse of narcotics and the
consumerism of our age when, he said, man is fed on "dreams, i.e.
drugs which deceive the hunger for life."
Speaking against abortion, the archbishop said, "Easter is a test
of conscience before life. The Christian is called on to be for
life. The Christian is called on to defend and promote life."
Touching on the Kosovo crisis, Msgr Bozanic said, "(...) we are
hearing about killings, violence and the exile of innocent people
in Kosovo and the surrounding areas. We wish to be close to all who
suffer, not only in sympathy, but in prayer and effective help as
well."
At the end of his message, Croatia's Catholic primate called on all
celebrating Easter and all people of good will in Croatia to stand
for the celebration of life.
