ZAGREB, Feb 19 (Hina) - A session of the Croatian Democratic Union
(HDZ) main committee, previously convened for 25 February, has been
postponed until this June when the 10th anniversary of the
establishment of the party is to be marked the highest level.
According to a decision of the Croatian ruling party, the HDZ
election headquarters will be appointed and the election strategy
determined at the June session. In this way, the party will begin
its election campaign, the HDZ Secretary-General, Drago Krpina
said in Zagreb on Friday.
It is customary for the HDZ main committee to hold a session
annually, and that's why it will establish the election
headquarters and present its election strategy at the June
meeting.
This (the election headquarters and strategy) had not been planned
for the session which should have been held in February, Krpina told
a news conference, and added that it would be too early to launch the
election campaign this month.
Such a protracted campaign, regarding that elections have been
planned for the end of 1999, would take too much time needed for the
resolution of social problems and for agreement with other parties,
he added.
Considering possible amendments to the election law, the HDZ
Secretary-General announced that a parliamentary discussion on the
issue would be conducted one or two months before the elections are
scheduled. He voiced confidence that a compromise would be reached
with the Opposition Six.
He called on Opposition Six MPs to resume their political duties at
the Croatian National Parliament (Sabor) in accordance with
recommendations of Council of Europe officials.
Krpina also called for a dialogue between all political parties on
open issues, and assessed that increasingly strain relations on the
Croatian political scene would be to the detriment of the Croatian
society and State.
A call for a breach of law and the provocation of unrest cannot solve
any problem of the Croatian society and State, but rather worsen
conflicts, Krpina told reporters adding that instead, parties
should strive for the promotion of their own political ideas.
The delay of the HDZ main committee's session will probably
instigate speculations, just as it was about the postponement of
the government reshuffle, the HDZ spokesman, Ivica Ropus, said.
Ropus confirmed that the government reconstruction had been
delayed due to the flu of President Franjo Tudjman.
It is still unknown when exactly the announcement on the government
reshuffle will be given, but the public will be notified of it
timely, he added.
