ANKARA, Feb 10 (Hina) - Turkish President Suleyman Demirel, on
Wednesday gave a dinner in honour of his guest Croatian President
Franjo Tudjman who is on a three-day state visit to Turkey.
I am confident that the speedy promotion of the relations between
Turkey and Croatia as well as the close cooperation between our
countries are contributing to the establishment of the regional
peace and stability and to the achievement of our mutual interest
and joint goals, Turkish President Demirel said proposing the toast
to President Tudjman.
Demirel said Tudjman's visit would help to advance the already
strong bilateral ties and cooperation.
According to him, Turkey views Croatia as a partner in reaching the
regional stability and economic cooperation and is very pleased
that Croatia succeeded in achieving the territorial sovereignty
and integrity.
Demirel said his country attached great importance to the promotion
of a lasting peace in Bosnia-Herzegovina and expressed his belief
that the full implementation of the Dayton Accords was
exceptionally important. Demirel described the signing of the
Agreement on Special Relations between Croatia and the Moslem-
Croat Federation as a useful stage in the achieved peace process.
Recalling treaties Turkey and Croatia signed on Wednesday,
President Tudjman said these deals opened new pages of the
bilateral cooperation covering political, economic as well as
cultural, scientific and technological sectors.
Croatia counts on your support to our stand that Croatia, being a
Central European and Mediterranean country where it belonged
historically and permanently, cannot accept any kind of Balkan and
neo-Yugoslav integration, Tudjman stressed.
The Balkans is the unreturnable part of the Croatian past where
Versailles peace creators had placed us, but, today under the
current circumstances, they cannot understand reasons why the
Croatian state policy resists so resolutely attempts "to push"
Croatia into, for us overcome, Balkan and south-eastern European
political frameworks.
At the very beginning of the ceremonial dinner, Turkish President
Demirel conferred on President Tudjman the Turkish highest state
order.
Before that, Tudjman held talks with Turkish Parliament Speaker
Hikmet Cetin.
