action "Storm" in 1995 until today, 17 people have been killed in
the Lika-Senj county. Thirty-one incidents of accidental mine
detonations were recorded, where 10 people were killed. In the same
period, several dozen other incidents were recorded, the Croatian
Helsinki committee for human rights (HHO) reported on Monday.
Revoking claims that the police was not reacting properly to these
incidents, Interior Minister Ivan Penic stated that the police had
energetically responded to these incidents.
Claims that Lika is continually experiencing terrorist acts of
violence, the HHO in its statement states that there have been
several such cases in the past few months.
Noting that all these incidents were reported to the police, the HHO
stated that "to date, the police have not solved one of these
crimes".
HHO believes that "government bodies, evidently were not
sufficiently persistent to resolve these incidents". The HHO
claims that instead they are inclined to preserve the "Storm"
ethnically cleansed areas; in preventing the return of Serb
refugees as well as evicting the few Serbs who have returned.
Minister Penic stated in Slavonski Brod, that the police
energetically responded to any such incidents. "It is a fact that
the police administration for the Lika-Senj county recorded one
incident of an explosion, back in 1996, eight in 1997 and four last
year and since the beginning of this year, three. It is not true that
there were 20 explosions last year, as claimed", said Penic.
