ZAGREB, Feb 3 (Hina) - The Jewish organisation B'nai B'rith was not
surprised by the discontinuation of the pre-trial investigation in
the Nada Sakic case, the honorary international president of B'nai
B'rith, Tommy Baer told the Voice of America on Tuesday.
I am not surprised by the fact that the investigation into the Nada
Sakic case has been discontinued, Baer said adding that from the
beginning B'nai B'rith believed that her case was not so important
as the case of her husband Dinko Sakic.
Commenting on reasons on the grounds of which the Argentinean
authorities had extradited Nada Sakic to Croatia, Baer said there
was a difference in connection with the quality and quantity of
evidence necessary for the arrest of persons and their extradition
to other country and, on the other hand, evidence for issuing an
indictment against them.
Nada Sakic was arrested, since there was a probability that she
might have been be liable for crimes. She was in the camp, but just
her presence on the spot does not mean that she committed crimes
against humanity, Baer said.
He added that the fact not to continue with further prosecution did
not mean that Nada Sakic did not commit crimes against humanity,
but, Baer said, evidence indicated that she was not responsible for
a criminal offence.
I am sure that the state attorney would demand the beginning of the
trial against Nada Sakic, if there were enough evidence, Baer
added.
Baer told the Voice of America that it seemed to him that the
Croatian authorities were conducting, in a very good manner, the
investigation in the Dinko Sakic case, and that's why there was no
reason to believe that they would act differently in the Nada Sakic
case.
Tommy Baer had visited Croatia twice. His first travel to Croatia
was in 1995 when he met Croatian President Tudjman on the island of
Brijuni. Baer arrived in Croatia in July 1998 for the second time to
follow the continuation of the prosecution against Dinko Sakic.
Croatian President Tudjman invited Baer to be an official monitor
at the trial against Dinko Sakic.
B'nai B'rith worked intensively on files on Dinko Sakic, but did not
take active part in the Nada Sakic case.
B'nai B'rith is the most influential Jewish organisation with
branches in 57 countries. It is the only Jewish organisation to have
its permanent representatives in the United Nations and th European
Union.
B'nai B'rith was established 154 years ago and tackles different
issues such as the programme of education, the fight against
terrorism, the hunting down of war criminals or the struggle for the
respect for human rights.
This organisation re-opened its branch in Croatia in 1998 after
many years of interval.
