UNION LEADER: LOW TURNOUT IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS

ZAGREB, Dec 14 (Hina) - The president of the Croatian Teachers' Union (SHU), Dalimir Kuba, expects the turnover at Thursday's strike of scientists, school teachers and university professors will, unlike last week's 70% turnout at a strike of public workers and civil servants, be between 30 and 50%. The SHU is today organising a strike together with the Union of Science and Higher Education in protest at the government's refusal to increase the basic salaries of public workers and civil servants by five percent. According to first reports from the field, about 40% of union members participated in the strike in Zadar and Vukovar-Srijem counties, whereas only 10 percent of union members participated in the strike in Pozega-Slavonija and Bjelovar-Bilogora counties.
