in the new year. Some 200 retired policemen rallied in front of the government building in downtown Zagreb seeking changes in a law on pension rights of active military and authorised officials which came into force last Dec. 8. Owing to the retroactive application of the law, policemen retired between 31 Dec. 1998 and 7 Dec. 1999 receive pensions 40-60 percent smaller than those retired under a former law. The delegation first talked to Deputy Interior Minister Josip Vresak, who promised a bill of amendments to the contentious law would be forwarded into urgent parliamentary procedure.
