SOME 200 RETIRED POLICEMEN PROTEST IN FRONT OF GOVT'S BUILDING

ZAGREB, Dec 13 (Hina) - About 200 retired employees with the Croatian Interior Ministry on Wednesday morning staged a rally in front of the Government's building in the downtown Zagreb, insisting on talks with Prime Minister Ivica Racan or his first deputy on their problem in the adjustment of pensions. These former police members, retired between 31 December 1998 and 7 December 1999, asked for changes of the law on the rights for the pension insurance of military staff and policemen. These former police members, retired between 31 December 1998 and 7 December 1999, asked for changes of the law on the rights for the pension insurance of military staff and policemen. They believe that under this law they are deprived of their rights as they are receiving lower pensions as against pensions of other policemen who have less years of service. The problem occurred after they were retired in accordance to one law but are receiving pensions under the other law. The protesters demanded that their current pension base should be raised from the 45-percent of the average income in their last year of service to 75-85 percent depending on the length of the service. Demonstrators' representative said the ministries of labour and justice had drawn up an amendment to the disputable act and this draft should have been considered by the Government last month according to the promise which the First Deputy PM Goran Granic had given them during their last protest rally in the mid-November. Protesters this morning refused to talk with an assistant to Interior Minister, Josip Vresk, claiming he also failed to live up to his promise. (hina) ms
