ZAGREB, Dec 11 (Hina) - Croatia does not have a clear strategy of
relations between the Homeland and Croatian minorities in European
countries, Croatian parliament speaker Zlatko Tomcic said during
his presentation at the Croatian Minorities' Forum in Zagreb
Monday.
Tomcic said the government should open an office aiming at the
establishment of a strategy of relations with all Croatian
minorities. The office should also be in charge of the protection of
rights of Croatian minorities.
The Croatian Minorities' Forum is an annual meeting discussing the
status and issues of Croatian minorities in European countries.
The Forum is being held for the fifth time.
In his presentation, Tomcic divided Croats outside Croatia in three
groups: the Diaspora, Croats in Bosnia-Herzegovina and
autochtonous Croatian minorities.
The Croatian parliament speaker believes that the Homeland cannot
treat all three groups equally.
The Forum is attended by representatives of Croatian minorities
from Austria, Italy, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Hungary,
Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, as well as representatives of the
Croatian government and parliament.
Croatian Assistant Foreign Minister Nenad Prelog stressed Croatia
must strengthen its relations with Croats in the world. Croatia
must guarantee the rights of Croatian minorities in the world
listed in international agreements on the protection of
minorities. So far, Croatia has signed such agreements with Hungary
and Italy, and is to sign the agreements with Romania and Slovakia,
he added.
Prelog stressed the Croatian minority in the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia was completely unprotected. He added this issue would be
tackled in all future talks on the normalisation of relations
between the two countries.
He added the Croatian government would discuss measures for the
improvement of relations with Croats outside Croatia.
