ZAGREB, Nov 23 (Hina) - A two-day conference, organised by the
Croatian Helsinki Committee (HHO), finished on Thursday evening in
Zagreb when its participants adopted conclusions which would be
circulated among participants in the Zagreb Summit tomorrow.
The conference entitled "Human Rights in Southeastern Europe and
Possibilities for European Integration," draw representatives of
countries from this region which would attend tomorrow's Summit.
The conclusions call on the EU member states to liberalise their
policy of border transfer for citizens from southeastern Europe and
soften their immigration policy toward those nationals.
The participants in the human rights conference believe that one of
the most important criteria for integration of southeastern
European countries into Europe should be their commitment to
protection of human rights and their mutual cooperation.
Leaders of the countries in the region should show readiness to take
over responsibility for war crimes committed in the name of states
they represent, participants in the HHO conference maintain.
Human right activists advocated the normalisation of the relations
between countries which were hit by wars as well as the
normalisation of their ties with the EU.
They urged the opposition to nationalism and requested that
problems caused by the wars should be solved.
Civil associations in the region should control the work of
governmental institutions, they added.
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should be engaged in the
protection of human and national minorities' rights and offer
assistance to war victims,
Members of Helsinki committees in the region also ask those
countries to revoke visas.
They urged governments to support scientific, educational and
media initiatives which will inform their citizens of the
consequences of war, without any signs of glorification.
Human rights activists also called on the Zagreb Summit
participants to take into consideration the aforementioned
criteria when they prepare strategies for the future cooperation
between the EU and countries in the region.
