ZAGREB, Dec 5 (Hina) - The president of the Main Council of the
Croatian Union of Science, Vilim Ribic, on Tuesday accused the
leaders of unions gathering workers in industry of betraying the
basic principles of union movement - solidarity and social
justice.
Yesterday's new conference by the heads of unions of industrial
branches, at which they opposed the strike of the unions of workers
in the public sector, announced for this Friday, represents the
"dusk of unionism in Croatia," Ribic said.
The leaders of industrial unions have decided not to react in
support of workers who are not receiving salaries, for the sake of
protecting salaries in public and state companies. They are
protecting their privileged salaries, Christmas bonuses, multiple
holiday allowances, privileged interest rates on housing loans -
everything teachers, scientists and medical staff can only dream
of, Ribic said.
Only ten percent of workers in public companies are not receiving
salaries, while the others receive much higher salaries than
teachers and scientists, given their qualifications, Ribic said.
