ZAGREB, Dec 5 (Hina) - Monday's attempt at conciliation between the government and trade unions of civil servants and public service workers failed, and the parties in the dispute may submit new offers by noon on Wednesday, the
Coordination of Croatian Public Service Workers' Unions said on Tuesday. The government turned down the unions' request for an 8.5 percent basic salary increase and the payment of a 1,000 kuna Christmas and 400 kuna child's bonus. The government also did not give up on cutting gross salaries by ten percent next year. The unions abided by their request for the 8.5 percent increase and proposed signing a new work agreement under which salaries in public and state services would be adjusted with those in the economy every four months. The unions have announced a general strike for Dec. 8.(hina) ha
