ZAGREB, Oct 26 (Hina) - In the first eight months of 2000, 9,889 fires were reported in Croatia, causing damage amounting to 644.7 million kuna, which is a 3.2 percent increase as against the entire 1999. Nineteen persons were killed
in the fires and another 125 suffered light or serious injuries, Deputy Interior Minister Josip Vresk told the House of Representatives on Thursday. Explaining a report on fire protection in the first eight months of this year, Vresk said 7,180 fires had broken out in the open, consuming about 118,600 hectares of land, which was almost 10 times more than the previous year. Damage caused by the fires amounts to 575.8 million kuna. Another 2,090 fires broke out on buildings, he added. Most of the fires (about 84 percent) were caused by negligence whereas 2.9 percent or 292 fires were cases of arson. Most cases of arson - 181 - were reported on buildings and 101
