ZAGREB, Oct 18 (Hina) - A defence attorney for a senior officer into
whom the Zagreb State Attorney's Office requested an investigation
last week, told Hina Wednesday his client, General Zagorac and
company were suspected of graft, causing damage in excess of a
million kuna to the Defence Ministry.
The County State Attorney's Office has leveled charges against five
persons under suspicion of having used Ministry funds for
reconstructing a sea-side summerhouse of Antun Sporer, attorney
Branko Seric said.
Seric is representing General Vladimir Zagorac, former defence
minister's assistant in charge of purchase.
Sporer, whose summerhouse is mentioned above, is one of the
suspects. He is a former vice-chairman of the Zagreb City Assembly
and president of the Zagreb Chamber of Crafts.
The State Attorney's Office last week requested an investigation of
Zagorac, Sporer, Matko Kakarigi (former Defence Ministry
construction department head), retired colonel Juraj Vojkovic, and
assistant director of Split's company "Aci", Leo Kurent.
The prosecution has brought charges against them for graft and
white-collar crime. In case they are found guilty, they are looking
at one to ten years in prison.
Seric said the preliminary hearing will be held on November 7, after
which the investigative judge will decide whether there are grounds
for initiating an investigation.
