PARLIAMENT SPEAKER COMMENTS ON LATEST EVENTS IN SERBIA
ZAGREB, Oct 5 (Hina) - Croatian parliament speaker Zlatko Tomcic on
Thursday evening commented to the latest developments in Belgrade,
neighbouring Yugoslavia's capital rocked by violent
demonstrations.
He believes that anyone familiar with the situation in Serbia over
the past decade could have expected some form of unrest after the
refusal to recognise recent electoral results.
Tomcic regretted that Serbia's people had to resort to
demonstrations to acquire their rights, saying material damage and
possible human victims were not a democratic way to do so. He was
hopeful today's events would mark the beginning of democratic
processes in Serbia.
He believes a new leadership in Serbia might be promising for
Croatia-Yugoslavia relations to enter the stage of normalisation.
Milosevic's departure is an opportunity for relations in the entire
region to normalise, which should enable Croatia to play the
stabilising factor role, Tomcic said.
He added, however, that anything might be expected from Milosevic.
Tomcic said Milosevic was entirely unpredictable, and dared not
predict what he might do. He said he never trusted Milosevic's good
intentions or democratic orientation.
