ZAGREB, Oct 20 (Hina) - The European Union will technically assist
Croatia's state administration in adapting to European standards,
to which end a financial memorandum will be signed next week,
Croatia's European Integration Ministry said on Friday.
Croatia and the EU are entering a new stage of relations, so the
Croatian government and the European Commission are providing
preconditions to step up Croatia's participation in European
integration processes. Projects of technical assistance to bodies
of state administration are the first institutional example of this
cooperation, said a ministry statement.
"Eight EUR3 million projects have been directed at creating and
enhancing the institutional skills of state administration bodies
to adapt them to European standards and practices," it said.
The financial memorandum will be signed in Zagreb on Tuesday by
Croatia's European Integration Minister Ivan Jakovcic and the
chief of the European Commission to Croatia, Per Vinther.
The projects in question should establish structures which will
coordinate, programme, implement and monitor EU assistance
programmes for Croatia, reinforce structures adjusting Croatian
legislation to EU regulations, support regional development and
privatisation in tourism, incite tourism on the local level,
provide legal assistance to the judiciary, the reform of state
administration and the education of civil servants, and support
small and medium-sized entrepreneurship in Croatia.
The State Bureau of Statistics is receiving technical assistance to
prepare the 2001 census.
This is the first EU assistance to be directed through Croatian
state institutions, which once again accentuates Croatia's partner
status in the EU enlargement process, the statement said.
