VARAZDIN BAROQUE NIGHTS FESTIVAL CLOSES VARAZDIN, Oct 9 (Hina) - This year's jubilee 30th Varazdin Baroque Nights, which were opened on September 24 by Croatian President Stipe Mesic, closed on Sunday evening with an award-giving
ceremony. The two-week event was dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the death of Johann Sebastian Bach. The crown of the festival was last night's performance of Bach's The Passion According to Matthew at the Varazdin Cathedral. The festival included about 15 concerts held in Varazdin and nearby towns. The festival was opened by the Zagreb Soloists. Performing at the festival was also Lithuanian cellist David Geringas, who won the 'Jurica Murai' award. The traditional festival awards 'Ivan Lukacic' this year went to musicologist Erika Krpan, the Slovene Chamber Choir and the Slovene Philharmonics.(hina) rml
