ZAGREB, July 9 (Hina) - Latest events in Belgrade are the
continuation of the organised activities the purpose of which is to
annul the statehood of Montenegro, read a statement released by the
national community of Montenegrins in Croatia on Saturday.
This community maintains that it is the unalienable right of
citizens and legitimate organs in Montenegro to decide on the
destiny of Montenegro and to live in a free, democratic and
independent state of Montenegro as a member country of the United
Nations.
"Montenegro is already recognisable thanks to its democratic steps
forward and we expect it will continue on the path towards the full
independence of the Montenegrin nation," read the statement.
We hope that international factors that, we believe, would like to
have a permanent peace, will not this time act as they acted in the
wake of World War First when they contributed to the disappearance
of the state of Montenegro, its ally.
The statement is issued after Montenegro refused to endorse
amendments to the constitution of the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia (which formally consists of Serbia and Montenegro).
Amendments substantially lessen the political influence of
Montenegro on federal institutions, and enable the incumbent
Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic whose current term of office
expires in 2001, to be re-elected for yet another term of office.
Montenegro described the constitutional changes as a brutal
attempt of Belgrade to annul Montenegro's statehood and transform
the FRY into a Greater Serbia.
