DJAKOVO, July 2 (Hina) - Croatian President Stipe Mesic said on
Sunday the six parties within the ruling coalition must reach all
decisions within legally elected bodies of authority.
The six parties cannot pass any decisions and are not entitled to
meet, this must be done by the mechanisms this people has elected,
the President said in Djakovo after attending mass in the eastern
town's cathedral. Mesic was there as chief patron of "Djakovacki
Vezovi", a local traditional folklore manifestation.
"I want this (decision-making) to return within constitutional and
legal frameworks and this is why I must give them (the coalition)
this message," he asserted.
According to the President, not everything can function normally in
the coalition because it comprises six well-defined parties, with
different teams and tasks. The important thing is for the "parties
to agree on the stretegic direction," he said.
Speaking about his most important steps in recent months, President
Mesic singled out the establishment of good relations with
neighbours with whom, he said, all open issues are resolved
bilaterally and with whom Croatia shares aspirations to reach
standards which will enable integration with European institutions
as soon as possible.
"With our neighbours I have won acknowledgement of and
understanding that Croatia today has the opportunity to activate
its production and export possibilities," said the President.
He added he was advocating several projects endorsed by the
international community, including a highway from the Italian
border to Turkey, across Slovenia, Croatia, and Greece, the
cleansing of the Danube river to make it navigable in eastern-most
Croatia, an oil pipeline from the Caspian Sea to Croatia, across
Romania and Hungary, and a gas pipeline from Norway to Croatia,
across Poland.
Speaking about the "Djakovacki Vezovi" manifestation, President
Mesic said the event showed that "we don't have to run from
tradition, but remember it to leave something for those coming
after us."
The manifestation opened on June 30 and wraps up today.
