ZAGREB, May 10 (Hina) - Lieutenant Colonel Gordan Cvetnic, head of the Croatian team with the UNASMIL peace troops in Sierra Leone, told the Croatian Defence Ministry by telephone Wednesday the Croatian members of the UN Mission were
safe and one member had left home for rest and relaxation. Although under relative control, the security situation in Sierra Leone is still complex. In the past 24 hours there had been no wide conflicts. The arrival and deployment of British parachuters is expected to stabilise the situation further, Cvetnic reported. Recently tensions have escalated in Sierra Leone including shoot-outs between rebel forces and peacekeeping troops. Some 500 UN peace-keepers are being held hostage and at least one believed to have been killed in the clashes. Ten Croatian Army officers have since September 1999 been participating in the UN peacekeeping mission in this country.(hina) lml
