ZAGREB, April 14 (Hina) - "European Perspectives of the National
Security and Defence of Croatia" was the title of a conference which
took place at Zagreb's European House in the presents of Croatian
senior officers on Friday.
The subjects of discussion mostly pertained to Croatia's joining
military, security and political associations, the organisation of
the Croatian defence system and the reorganisation of the Croatian
Armed Forces.
Croatian Armed Forces Chief-of-Staff General Petar Stipetic
stressed Croatia's important geo-strategic and military and
security position, on which Europe's security, political and
economic stability greatly depends.
Stipetic accentuated Croatia's accession into European
associations and NATO, which would significantly reduce the
possibility of direct military danger, as important conditions for
Croatia's economic and democratic development.
The crisis epicentre in Europe is moving further away to the South
East, which accentuates the increasing necessity for engaging
international peace forces to impose peace, Stipetic said.
Speaking about the reorganisation of the Croatian Armed Forces,
Stipetic said a smaller, but more efficient peace-time army could
ensure a secure life of all Croatian citizens, with a strong and
ready army and reserves.
The Croatian President's advisor for military issues, General Imra
Agotic, stressed the need for depolitisation and
professionalisation of the command personnel.
He described as necessary an urgent drafting of a national defence
strategy and its adoption in the Parliament which, he said, would
significantly facilitate the realisation of the defence system.
