ZAGREB, April 17 (Hina) - The supervisory board of "Vecernji List"
daily on Monday issued a statement saying today's session gave a
positive assessment of the intention of the Austrian publishing
house Styria AG from Graz to take over the majority package of
"Vecernji List" shares from the current owner Caritas Fund.
The daily's director Branko Lovric told Hina over the phone the
activities connected with the sale of the majority package of
shares to the Austrian publishing house were "almost completed and
what remains is to complete formal-legal activities in line with
Croatian laws."
Styria AG, which publishes Kleine Zeitung and Die Presse as well as
other leading Austrian papers, intends to support the current
profile of Vecernji List as an independent, civil, and open
newspaper, the supervisory board said.
According to the statement, the board has reaffirmed its commitment
to separate property and supervisory functions from the editorial
policy, which is within the jurisdiction of the editor-in-chief and
his associates, as well as its decisions made so far regarding the
reorganisation of the editorial board and the introduction of
measures of modern operation.
The supervisory board was today also informed of the fact that the
car dealer 'Zubak' and Montmontaza GmbH are investors in the
Caritas Fund, which in early 1998 bought Croatia's highest
circulation daily.
This revelation, made known in Sunday's issue of Vecernji List,
attracted huge attention of Croatia's media, which for two years
had been speculating about the daily's owners.
A parliamentary commission has been formed with the task to
establish the circumstances of the sale of Vecernji List.
