ZAGREB, April 3 (Hina) - The Croatian National Parliament will
discuss the situation in banking at its next session, scheduled for
April 12, Parliament president Zlatko Tomcic said at Monday's
meeting with representatives of the Union of Banking and Financial
Businesses.
The unionists requested to hold talks with Tomcic in the wake of, as
they put it, excesses in banking into which politics was meddling.
"Politics will have to leave banking, and local politics ought to no
longer have its local banks," Union president Branko Jakopec said.
The Union suggested to the parliament amendments to the law which
would improve the situation in banking and reduce the number of
banks, Jakopec said, warning that the sale of banks was not
regulated by a separate law as was the case with Croatian
Telecommunications.
Besides the legislative, personnel changes were also necessary,
without which a turn around in politics regarding banking, Jakopec
asserted, adding the Union had not especially asked for the
dismissal of Croatian National Bank governor Marko Skreb.
Tomcic supported union requests for changes in the legislative and
personnel areas and offered that they submit their suggestions to
the Parliament's Committee for Economy and Finances.
In the past period there was often insufficient independence in the
functioning of the Croatian central bank, but its last actions are
in line with its independent position and legal authorities, Tomcic
said.
The Government must contribute to changes in banking through the
drafting of the strategy of Croatia's economic policy which would
include the monetary and financial strategy of the state, Tomcic
stressed.
