Brajsa was awarded the Golden Charter of Peace and Democracy by the
International League of Humanists, which gathers 35,000 members
from around the world. The League was established in 1974 on the
initiative of Croatian academician Ivan Supek.
The League's secretary-general Zdravko Surlan said the basic
principle of the League is the promotion of peace and protection of
human dignity and honour. Jelena Brajsa has demonstrated with her
work that peace comes from the heart first, Surlan said at a
ceremony held at the hotel 'Panorama' in Zagreb.
Accepting her award, Brajsa expressed gratitude to her associates
and children, who gathered in large numbers at the ceremony.
"Had it not been for the children, and mothers and fathers, with
whom I have been working for 35 years, what could be said about me -
nothing really. Only together can we win peace, first in our hearts
and then in the world," she added.
The work of the International League of Humanists is based on the
Dubrovnik Declaration, which was adopted at the League's congress
in Philadelphia in 1976. The League, which is based in Sarajevo,
gathers intellectuals from 21 countries. Every year, it awards the
Golden Charter of Peace and Democracy to distinguished
individuals.
Today's ceremony in Zagreb was also attended by the current
president of the League, Helmut Moritz.
