ZAGREB, April 10 (Hina) - The Union of Romanies of Croatia has requested that the Romany national minority be named as a separate category in Croatia's Constitution, and not listed under with other national minorities under "Others".
Union president Nusret Seferovic made the request to Assistant Justice, Government and Self-Government Minister Slobodan Ljubisic in Zagreb on Monday during talks on changes to be made in Croatia's Constitution. The 4,500-member Romany Union forwarded the same request to Croatia's parliament and President Stipe Mesic in February, demanding the Romanies be not listed under the category "others." According to the last census, there were 6,900 Romanies living in Croatia. Seferovic claims there are actually between 150,000 and 200,000. "Many Romanies did not declare themselves as Romanies," he said explaining the discrepancy.(hina) ha mm
