The head of the Romany/Gypsy people group in Croatia, Nusred
Seferovic recalled that in February Croatian Romany had forwarded a
request to the Croatian National Parliament for amending the
Constitution with citing the Romany national minority
Seferovic announced his meeting with Justice Minister Stjepan
Ivanisevic on that matter for Monday.
Seferovic asserted that there were about 200,000 Romany in Croatia
although the last census showed a number of only 6,9000. He
explained that the reason for such different numbers was that many
did not want to declare that they were Romany.
The Romany community in Croatia is faced with numerous problems
such as Romany children's asking alms or possibilities for their
education.
Seferovic voiced hope that Croatian authorities would help them to
overcome problems and he primarily urged measures for compulsory
primary education of Romany kids.
During a celebration in a restaurant in Zagreb, an envoy of Croatia
President Stjepan Mesic, addressed the gathered. The envoy Sinisa
Jagodic said Croatia respected the Union of Romany of Croatia as an
association of Croatian Romany and supported their requests for
resolution of their urgent problems.
