ZAGREB, March 15 (Hina) - Representatives of public and civil
service unions on Tuesday morning handed out pamphlets to members
of parliament ahead of a Sabor discussion on this year's budget.
Union leaders voiced their basic request at a news conference --
that the burden of the budgetary self-sacrifice be equally
distributed on all budgetary users, not only public and civil
servants.
"We are prepared to accept sacrifices in the amount of salaries of
our members, if this will also be applied to employees in companies
owned or mostly owned by the state," president of the Croatian
Public Service Unions' Association, Vilim Ribic, said.
Ribic recalled other demands of public and civil service unions --
that net salaries of public servants not be decreased following a
decrease in the gross salary, and that the Government establish a
parity between the average salary in Croatia and salaries in public
services which would change according to the rates of unemployment
and the gross domestic product.
Should these requests not be heeded, unions will on March 21 hold a
strike of warning, Ribic reiterated.
Finance Minister Mato Crkvenac said the Government would motion a
procedure of determining salaries in state and public companies, as
requested by the unions.
