ZAGREB, MARCH 29 (Hina) - The relations between the United States
and Croatia and the return of all refugees and displaced persons to
their homes were main topics of Wednesday's talks led by Croatian
National Parliament's President, Zlatko Tomcic, and Robert
Frowick, a deputy of the United States' President's and State
Secretary's special aide for the implementation of the Dayton
accords.
The United States maintains that Croatia has opened a new chapter of
its history which is important both for Croatia and the entire
region, the American diplomat said after his talks with Tomcic
which he described as very constructive.
How much importance the United States is attaching to changes in
Croatia is shown by a few recent visit US State Secretary Madeleine
Albright to Zagreb, and I can tell you that President Clinton is
very attentively following what is going on and places great hope
and confidence in the future of Croatia, Frowick said.
He assessed hat Croatia was being on the right path towards
solutions of problems inherited from the previous government.
Today we have talked about the return of people who simply want to
come back to their homes, Frowick said voicing satisfaction with
the fact that today in Croatia individual rights and human factors
are being emphasised.
We would like to cooperate closely with the Croatian Government and
the Sabor that are initiating this process, the U.S. diplomat said
and reiterated that his country supported democratic processes in
Croatia.
The Sabor President Tomcic added that during the talks Frowick and
he pointed to Croatia's important role in the stabilisation of the
entire region. He said the Croatian Government, particularly the
Sabor, would do their best to fulfil their commitments and
strengthen Croatia's position in the international community.
Croatia would like to contribute to the stability of the region,
primarily with its own democratisation and with enabling all who
want to come back to return to their homes, Tomcic said adding that
the return is a fundamental human right and a key issue for the
stabilisation of relations in the region.
