Croatian de-miners stop working in protest over insufficient funds

ZAGREB, June 30 (Hina) - Croatian mine removal specialists on Thursday stopped working and staged a protest rally in Zagreb's main square demanding that the government ensure funds for the continuation of the clearance of mines and booby traps left over from the 1990s Homeland Defence War.

"De-mining has come to a halt due to the government's behaviour and failure to ensure money which it had promised," the leader of the de-miners' trade union, Igor Vukorepa, told the rally in the Ban Josip Jelacic square.

According to Vukorepa, HRK 371 million was promised for mine removal in 2011. So far, HRK 238 million has been provided to mine removal companies, which means that HRK 130 million is lacking.

Vukorepa said that nothing had been agreed at a meeting with Rural Development Minister Petar Cobankovic earlier in the day.

Several hundred de-miners from 28 private companies gathered for the protest rally in downtown Zagreb.
