Barroso believes EU leaders will decide on Croatia next week

BRUSSELS, June 17 (Hina) - European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Friday that he believed that European Union member-states' leaders would decide on the conclusion of Croatia's EU accession negotiations at their summit next week.

A week ago, the European Commission forwarded to the Council of the European Union the negotiating positions on the remaining four policy chapters, assessing that Croatia is ready for the conclusion of the membership talks. Thus, the executive arm of the EU recommended the closing of Croatia's entry talks.

We have assumed our position and now I don't want to speculate when member-states will reach agreement, it is up to them and the Hungarian presidency to make a decision, but I am sure that we can expect certain development at the European Council next week, Barroso said after his talks with Croatian President Ivo Josipovic.

Barroso said that the Commission's recommendation on Croatia's readiness to complete the negotiations was based on firm evidence.
