ZAGREB, Feb 4 (Hina) - Presidential candidates Drazen Budisa and
Stipe Mesic at Friday's press conference expressed satisfaction
about media monitoring electoral campaigns so far.
Both candidates said that if elected presidents, they would
regularly hold press conferences in the premises of the Croatian
Journalists' Association.
When asked to comment on the arrest of Miroslav Kutle, the
candidates said this was evidence that a law-based state was
beginning to function, and that politics has no influence on the
work of police.
Given that the Zagreb auditing house, which examined the legality
of financing Mesic's presidential campaign, on Friday reported
there were no irregularities and illegality, Budisa was asked
whether his electoral headquarters would call auditors. Budisa
expressed satisfaction with positive results of the auditing
house, and reminded he had already announced the names of most of
his sponsors and presented reporters with the list of names of Croat
Americans who financed a part of his campaign.
When asked to state his opinion on Joer Haider's Freedom Party
joining the Austrian Government, Budisa said it was clear what kind
of consequences countries in which radical right-wing parties
gained a support like Haider did in Austria faced counties in
today's Europe. He was satisfied because the parliamentary
elections in Croatia demonstrated that radical parties do not have
the support of the Croatia's voters.
The two candidates were asked to comment on a statement of the
Croatian Foreign Minister, Tonino Picula, that Croatia would
continue to finance the Croatian Defence Council (HVO). "We want to
promote relations with Bosnia-Herzegovina, Budisa stressed, and
added Croatia would no longer finance profiteers. He said that
Croatia still had an obligation to help Croats in Bosnia-
Herzegovina, Budisa said. Mesic, on the other hand, believes that
Croatia will never join the European Union if it continues to
finance the HVO. He stressed, however, that such a decision should
be passed by the Croatian National Sabor.
