ZAGREB, Jan 8 (Hina) - The promotion for the presidential elections in Croatia started in the first minutes of Saturday morning. Nine candidates will be running for the president. The elections are to be held on January 24. The
candidates are Drazen Budisa, Ante Djapic, Mate Granic, Ante Ledic, Slaven Letica, Tomislav Mercep, Stipe Mesic, Ante Prkacin and Zvonimir Separovic. The presidential elections in Croatia will be held a month and a half after the death of the first Croatian President, Franjo Tudjman, who was elected in 1992 and 1997 and died on December 10, 1999. Stipe Mesic, Ante Prkacin and Zvonimir Separovic.

Mate Granic is the candidate of the Croatian Democratic Union
(HDZ). The Croatian People's Party's (HNS) candidate, Stipe Mesic,
will enter the electoral contest with the support of the Opposition
Four, namely the Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS), the Liberal Party
(LS) and the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS).
Other presidential candidates are president of the Croatian Party
of Rights (HSP) Ante Djapic, president of the Croatian people's
party (HPS) Tomislav Mercep and president of the New Croatia Ante
Prkacin.
The presidential elections will also include three independent
candidates, namely Ante Ledic, Slaven Letica and Zvonimir
Separovic.
All of the candidates will be presenting their programmes until
midnight January 22, namely until a media blackout. The third
presidential elections in Croatia will be held on January 24.
In case none of the candidates receive over 50 percent of votes, the
elections will be held again in 15 days. Two candidates who received
the majority of the vote in the first round will participate in the
second round of presidential elections, February 7.
