IMOTSKI, Jan 15 (Hina) - The Croatian Party of Rights (HSP)
presidential candidate, Anto Djapic, on Saturday said that
Croatia's new president should be from the ranks of the nationalist
right-wing as a counter balance to the left-wing which dominates in
the Croatian National Sabor.
Fundamental political problems, such as the forgiveness and return
of Serbs, integration with the European Union and NATO, and the
organisation of the Croatian Army, must be solved by the
nationalist right-wing in order to achieve balance with the Sabor,
Djapic said at an electoral rally held in the southern Croatian town
of Imotski Saturday.
He said he was the only real choice of nationalists and voters in
Croatia today, and added he would, as the President, guarantee that
the new parliamentary authorities would not implement any form of
retaliation.
The HSP presidential candidate denied claims that he was an
extremist, racist and xenophobe. "I want to act in line with a
democratic procedure and constitutional frames, but on the
foundation of lustration", Djapic specified.
A part of his programme read that no one in Croatia can claim greater
rights than Croatians. "If I am elected President, international
organisations will not impose sanctions on Croatia", Djapic
added.
Referring to yesterday's verdicts of the International Criminal
Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) which found five Bosnian
Croats guilty of crimes against humanity, Djapic said that the
verdict was not based on evidence but was exclusively politically
motivated. If elected president, Djapic would conduct "firm,
resolute and transparent policy" towards the ICTY in order to
preserve Croatia's national interests.
Referring to other presidential candidates, Djapic said some of
them had criminal files and were informants of the former Yugoslav
secret service of UDBA. He presented himself as the only real
alternative to Drazen Budisa, Stipe Mesic, and Mate Granic, adding
there was no significant political difference between those
candidates.
