NO SECOND ROUND IN PRESIDENTIAL POLL - ESTIMATES CANDIDATE MESIC

ZAGREB, Jan 13 (Hina) - There will be no second round in presidential elections, because Croatian citizens have understood my messages from 1971, as well as those from recent parliamentary elections, presidential candidate Stipe Mesic said on Thursday. I will be elected president of Croatia in the first round, the candidate of the Croatian People's Party/Croatian Peasants' Party/Istrian Democratic Assembly/Liberal Party/Social Democratic Action of Croatia coalition told reporters in Zagreb. Mesic reiterated that as Croatian president, he would advocate the rule of law and the equality of all citizens before the law, the reduction of presidential powers and the president's function as a factor of balance and state symbol, and that he would urge the new government to fulfil its pre-electoral promises.
