SLOVENIA IS GETTING READY FOR CONTROL OF "SCHENGEN BORDER"

LJUBLJANA, Dec 3 (Hina) - Within next two years, Slovenia will carry out preparations for implementing stricter standards for the control of the future "Schengen border", even though it cannot as yet count on accessing the European Union security database, Slovene Interior Minister Rado Bohinc said Monday. Bohinc told Slovene radio that the country had so far received 35 million German marks for equipping the control of its 670 kilometres-long border with Croatia. According to Bohinc, Slovenia cannot count on being included in databases on border crossings, travel documents and vehicles which enter EU countries from non-EU countries until 2005. After becoming an equal EU member, which, according to estimates, could take place in 2004, Slovenia must prove that it is capable of controlling the future EU "external border" , Bohinc said. According to him, the number of potential illegal migrants through Slovenia this year has decreased by one third in relation to the year before, which is the result of increased security measures and different migration directions. Within next two years, Slovene police would, apart from other measures, secure two new helicopters for surveilling the border with Croatia, and one police boat. (hina) np sb
