Slobodan Milosevic did not refuse legal advisors appointed last
week by the Hague Tribunal, the spokesman for the International
Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Jim Landale, told
Hina on the phone on Wednesday.
The ICTY last week appointed two legal advisors, Ramsey Clark and
John Livingstone, to help Milosevic in his defence, following his
request of October 26 that he meet the two attorneys.
Clark and Livingstone will have the possibility of confidential
contacts with Milosevic at the Scheveningen prison, which is
usually allowed only to the attorneys of the indicted. Milosevic
has already spoken with Clark on several occasions since his
transfer to The Hague. The two attorneys will assist in Milosevic's
defence, but they will not act as his lawyers nor will they be paid
by the ICTY.
Milosevic has been charged with crimes against humanity and
violations of the law or customs of war in Kosovo and Croatia.
He has refused to appoint legal counsel and considers the Hague
Tribunal illegal.
The ICTY had already appointed three 'amici curiae' (friends of the
court) to assist him in the trial due to his refusal to appoint legal
counsel. However, Milosevic refused to meet British attorney
Steven Kay, Dutch Misha Wladimirroff and Yugoslav attorney
Branislav Tapuskovic.
